Rare two-volume set exhibition catalogue published on occasion of two exhibitions at Space Niki and Sagacho Exhibit Space in 1986. The pink, staple-bound thinner volume (also with pink pages) is comprised of English texts by more than 25 Japanese artists, critics & writers. The extraordinary blue volume in thick card-covers is bound concertina-style with 26 two-sided surfaces, 17 feet long when fully unfurled — see pics. Color photographs of Saint Phalle’s works are interspersed with line drawings & texts, mostly in Japanese. Excellent condition overall, minor scuffs. Quite rare. This set is from the library of the late great Jill Johnston (1929-2010), a friend of the artist’s and a critic, radical lesbian feminist and champion of the avant-garde, and both volumes bear her distinctive stamp in blue ink which reads “Write first. then live.” J.J., as well as her initials in pencil.
