Hiroshige’s Tokaido. A page will show the Ukiyo-e color print and its companion page will show a photograph circa 1910 of the scene most likely used as Hiroshige’s source. Stab bound with ribbon-ties, in oblong blue boards with green, white and gilt lettering in Japanese on cover. 30 x 22.5cm. Japanese & English text, decorated endpapers, tissue guards. As an appendix the Tokaidochu-Hizakurige by Jippensha Ikku – a classic comedic story written in 1802 about two guys traveling the Tokaido road. Excellent condition with some rubbing around hinges and a thumb-sized abrasion on the front cover. Apparently reinforced with blue tape – see photo detail. Slight foxing throughout. Binding is strong and interior is immaculate. Interior is immaculate.
